Changes....
We say we are a country ready for change and yet California and many other states have added a Gay Marriage BAN to their CONSTITUTIONS. How is this? How can we be a country that longs and begs for change and yet we sit here and deny those within this country that ability to change? The ability to have something that all heterosexual couples can have? It's disgusting and it makes me angry. More than that- it makes my heart ache for those that were married and now will have to see said marriages annulled. It aches for those that may never get the same *common* rights of a heterosexual couple.

My soul is crying for those of you that are being denied.

Well, we just got our first black President. It was a long time in coming. It gives me hope that some day, gays will have the same rights as other couples.

--probably not in my lifetime, but some day. We'll still keep fighting, though.

And even though it won't be "legal", we're still having our ceremony. One of our dearest friends is an amazing spiritualist and she's doing the handfasting. We couldn't ask for anything more. We feel more blessed having her do the ceremony than we could ever hope for.

*sighs and shakes head* I just cant get my head around why anyone would want to BAN people from legally being in a loving relationship. The world is fucked.

Give it time though. I think a lot of younger people (our generation and younger) arent quite as conservative and anti-gay as older generations, so I think that by the time the kids that are being born now are old enough to vote, we might see change for the better in regards to this issue. At least I sincerely hope so.

...and while gay marriage is legal in Finland, it isnt at home in Australia, so you guys are still ahead of us.

I have to admit I was pretty sad as well, but then I realised that we have for the first time elected a president who supports civil unions. And we have a mostly democratic congress, most of whom also support civil unions. So, whether it's "marriage" or not doesn't really matter in my mind. The word is not as important as the rights, which I am praying are on the way soon, in whatever form we can get them. I understand separate is not equal, but even separate with some rights is a start.

One important thing to remember is that historically, anytime civil rights have been put to the popular vote, they are defeated because people are afraid of change, and afraid of what it might say about them as people to their neighbours, friends and family if they support these rights. In our case as well, rights will not be given by the American voters... they will be forced down the throats of Americans by judges "legislating from the bench" as the Bush administration has been so fond of saying. My hope with President Obama is that he will spearhead the change towards civil unions, and that our Senators and Representatives have the courage to stand up for what's right, not what's popular because among the American people, civil unions and gay marriage will never be popular, but they are the right thing to do.

If you want to help the cause, I would suggest ensuring that you know who your Representative and Senator are, both statewide and nationally, and write to them. Email them, call them. We have ours on speed-dial... their addresses are in our address books. Even an email will help. My heart breaks for those who's marriages are now in contention, but that is yet another example of why we all need to take action, and continue to make our voices heard.

And, in my heart and soul and moreover in the eyes of God/Goddess, we are married as surely as any straight couple. At the end of the day, at least that can never be taken from us.

Well, with a trifecta of democrats in the government now maybe things will start swinging in a more acceptable direction. Or maybe not, I still know plenty that were pleased with this particular turning of events, because apparently gay marriage will result in the Earth's destruction. *sigh*

Well, we don't know for certain if our marriage licences will be nullified or not. That issue has to go through the court system first.
